The War at Home
Part 1 of 6

A Civil War tie-in.

As the story opens Civil War is in full swing and Peter is talking to Mary Jane and Aunt May and a massive decision he needs to make in the next few hours; a decision that could mean the end of Spider-Man.

The story then flashes back to immediately after the Stamford incident. Peter is traveling with Tony Stark aboard a private jet to Stamford, where the authorities are still sorting out what happened. Tony's cell phone rings and he gets the news that a school was destroyed and the casualties could reach over 600 dead.

Two hours later, as Peter and Tony, dressed as Spider-Man and Iron man survey the carnage, Spidey notices the locals staring at them as if they are responsible for what happened. Iron doesn't blame them because, as heroes, the civilians see them as being just as responsible as those that caused the damage. When Spidey wants to continue to help, Iron Man tells him not to and they are only there because the White House requested they be there at the same time as the President, who is flying over in a helicopter.

Later at the White House, Peter waits just outside the Oval Office as Tony has a very short meeting with the President. After the meeting, Tony tells Peter the president wanted two things: to tell him that the Superhero Registration Act will be rushed though Congress, and to know if Tony was Iron man, which Tony confirmed. He tells Peter that from now on everything has changed and will be different; once the S.R.A. becomes law, everyone wearing a mask will be forced to reveal themselves to the government and those who refused will be labeled and treated as criminals.

Realizing this will split the superhero community down the middle, Peter pledges himself to Tony, the Government, and the S.R.A.. Tony then tells Peter that he needs more than his word: he wants Peter at his side publicly, as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Peter is shocked by what Tony is asking him to do and tells Tony he'll do anything but reveal himself. Tony then warns him that Peter has to do it or Peter, MJ and May will all be labeled as criminals and Tony won't be able to protect them if Peter refuses. At the airport, Tony tells Peter that he hopes Peter will reconsider. On the flight home, Peter calls his bank to check how much is left in his account.

The story flashes forward to the opening scene, where Peter, MJ and May discuss the situation. As Peter agonizes over what to do, the three of the weigh the pros and cons: If he reveals himself, then MY and May will be in danger and if he doesn't the three of them will have to go on the run. May has been silent until now, but when she speaks up she tells Peter that when she found out he was Spider-man, after the initial shock, she was angry. But she wasn't angry at Peter, she was angry at the world for labeling him as a monster or a criminal when she knew he was neither. May is proud of him and she wants him to reveal himself, no matter the risk, so the world can be just as proud of him. Peter tries to get MJ to talk some sense into May, but MJ agrees and tells Peter "Go get 'em, Tiger."

Four days later Peter wakes up early and is having second thoughts, until May shows up and gives Peter a gift: a classic red and blue Spider-Man costume

The next morning, Peter shows up in Tony's office five minutes before the press conference. He thanks Tony for everything he's done for him and his family and he's going to keep his word and stand beside Tony no matter what.

At the press conference, Tony introduces a fully-suited Spider-Man.
"Hi. Good morning. Thank you for coming," Spider-Man begins. "I'm standing here today because -- well, because -- I have an announcement to make."
