Down Among The Dead Men
Part 1 of 4
As two restaurant workers are taking out the night's trash in a darkened alley, they discover a badly beaten Spider-man among the garbage. Before Spider-man can warn them to run, Norman Osborn, dressed as the Green Goblin attacks from behind. Spidey lunges, grabbing the men and throwing them to safety back in the restaurant.
As Spider-man and the Green Goblin battle, Spidey wonders what normal people do on Sunday mornings. He doubts that most people spend it fighting twisted former friends in a rubber goblin mask.
Four hours earlier the Green Goblin was holding eighteen people hostage, threatening to gas them unless his demands were met. The Green Goblin's demand: Spider-man gut himself live on television. Spidey naturally refused to comply, which was when they began their fierce battle.
Realizing their agreed upon "truce" is now over (because Osborn "got bored") Spider-man realizes he needs to take the Green Goblin down and hits him with a mailbox, knocking the Green Goblin out cold.
After Spidey webs the Goblin up, a citizen gives Spidey a hard time for hitting the Goblin so hard, saying Spidey could have done taken him down without "brain-damaging the guy." Meanwhile, another bystander is injured when one of the Goblin's Pumpkin Bombs explodes. Spidey makes a quick exit when the police arrive and the gathered crowd begins to turn on him, blaming him for what happened.
Later, a very bruised Peter Parker arrives at his Aunt May's house to help her pack and move. A worried May asks Mary Jane if they should take Peter to the hospital, but MJ assures her that Peter will fine; he just needs some pain killers and time to heal.
May rushes into the living room to start recording CNN's coverage of the Spidey/Goblin battle because even though she hates the fact that Peter is in constant danger, she feels that, as a good aunt, she should document her famous nephew's heroic exploits. When Peter finds a tape labeled "Iron Man," May responds with a smile and says "It's that little mustache, sweetie."
While helping May pack boxes, Peter discovers May's engagement ring from Doctor Octopus. May tells Peter that it would feel like a betrayal of trust if she were to get rid of it.
After all these years, May has finally decided to move. She believes that the house is too big for just her and that it should be a family home again. Peter reassures her that she'll love living closer to him and MJ in Manhattan and that the move a smart one. But Peter and May have no idea that they are being watched by a shadowy figure hanging upside down outside in the trees.
A few days later, a mostly healed Peter is teaching his class when he is informed that he has an important phone call from the City Council. They inform him that his Uncle Ben's headstone has been vandalized.
When Peter arrives at the cemetery to inspect the damage, his cell phone rings and it is the shadowed figure from outside May's house. He tells Peter that he is the one that damaged Ben's headstone and that he knows Peter is Spider-man. Peter tries to tell him that the man has made some mistake. He then warns Peter that things can turn very ugly very fast if Peter's secret identity were to fall into the wrong hands, ending the call with "Care for a wheatcake, sweetie?"
Realizing May is in grave danger, Peter rushes to her new apartment, swinging through the city without his Spider-man costume on, hoping nobody gets a decent look at him. Peter crashes through her window, only to find May missing and her apartment trashed.
