With someone having discovered Spider-Man's secret identity and already kidnapped his Aunt May, Peter forces MJ into hiding and promises her everything will be fine, although he privately has his doubts.

Peter arranges to be out of school for a few weeks so the children won't be at risk and creates a reason May is missing.

Realizing he can't find May on his own and he can't call the police, Peter scrambles to find help. He calls Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, but she is stuck in Florida and won't be able to help Peter for another day or two. She suggests that Peter start by making a list of everyone that knows that Peter is Spider-man. The first name that comes to Peter's mind is Norman Osborn.

Spider-man visits Osborn's cell at Riker's Island and demands to know what he has done with May. Osborn denies any responsibility, but hints that he may have shared the secret of Spider-man's identity with another villain and in the event that Spidey ever succeed in throwing Osborn in jail, that villain should kidnap, torture, and execute Peter's oldest living relative. Osborn then backtracks and says there is also a good chance he is lying and just screwing with Peter's head. Figuring he'll never get the truth out of Osborn, Spidey leaves.

Still needing help, Spidey decides to ask the Avengers for help. And if they can't help him, then maybe they can get him in touch with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.

At the Avenger's mansion, Jarvis, the Avenger's butler, refuses to let Spidey in, so Spidey breaks in and ends up fighting the Avenger's security forces until Quicksilver takes Spidey down. Captain America arrives quickly calms the situation. Spidey explains the situation, but with his refusal to reveal his identity to the Avengers they won't be able to help him and Nick Fury is on a mission. Spidey gets frustrated and makes his leave.

Desperate, Spider-man asks for help from the other side of the law. He visits The Owl, a man with super villain connections and has his eye on being the next kingpin of crime. The Owl makes a few calls and his sources return two names: Electro and the Vulture.

At a secret Russian nightclub, Electro and Vulture spend their last night in New York celebrating a $20 million score, but Spider-man is already there, waiting for them...
